Chicken Harvest -- Take 1

At dawn this past Saturday the children crawled out of bed to the sights, sounds and smells of the first large chicken harvest. As you will see in the following photos, some didn't even bother to change out of their pajamas. Eighty plus birds were dressed and bagged for the kitchen freezer, including some of our excess of roosters of the native variety.

And, yes, everyone had a sample by day's end. The kitchen served soup with chicken and several of the staff had roasted chicken later in the day. Plans are to finish harvesting the flock this coming weekend.

Here's a squash we ate recently. It had volunteered in the garden (probably from a seed in the compost pile) and yielded a bucket full of fruit. The taste and texture were very similar to the butternuts we're used to. The color of the skin was a cream and green striped pattern. Dwain is saving seeds for future use.
