This week we experienced a ride in the little red three-wheeled taxis that dot Valle’s streets. The weather was rainy and the taxi provided a dry, fast ride to language school.

A visit to Agafam, a one- to two-week fair held annually in Tegucigalpa, occupied much of our time Thursday afternoon. Fair-like rides (merry-go-round, Ferris wheel, pirate ship, etc.), stands selling anything from candy to jewelry, eateries, and cattle stalls spread out over the fairground. After eating tacos, refried beans and meat, we walked through the farming area to view neatly groomed cattle and horses ready for show. Unlike at fairs and farm shows in PA, hammocks were strung the length of the open-air building. Cattle owners rested in the hammock beside their animal. For those of you reading the Horst’s blog, here is a picture of Janelle’s lunch:

The weather continues to feel cool, especially at night because our house has no insulation or heat. Friday night the temperature was about 46 degrees F and there was a gusty wind to keep our curtains blowing.

On Saturday afternoon we (along with Harlan, Ali, and some of the older boys from La Finca) hiked a gravely dirt road up a nearby mountain. We stopped periodically to catch our breath and enjoy the aerial view of Valle. Throughout the climb, we shared the road with only a handful of people and did not meet any motorized vehicles. Although, at one point, we jumped out of the way to allow some mountain bikers (most of them in full protective gear) to pass at breakneck speed. One wiped out just after passing us.

We purchased a hammock and hung it in our living room. Dwain took a Sunday afternoon nap in it.
