The Horst Family and Andrea spent most of the week in Costa Rica (time out of the country so they could again reenter Honduras and renew visas). Travel went smoothly and they returned safely. Thanks for your prayers.

We took a few hours this week to explore the many artisan shops in Valle de Angeles (the small town in which La Finca is located). We purchased a hammock we plan to hang in our living room. Also this week we began Spanish classes (3:30 – 5:30p.m. Mon.- Fri.) at Koinonia School (www.escuelavalledeangeles.org), about a 10 min. walk from La Finca. The profits from the school go to a local non-profit organization that provides shelter, daycare and educational programs to more than 350 Honduran children under 6 years-old while their parents try to earn a living.

The garden has experienced growth, planting and attacks from enemies this week. Zompopo Ants and other as-of-yet unidentified cutting insects have made their presence (and appetites) known. The hoped for early peas were cut and carried away by the aforementioned ants. Dwain has experimented with wood ashes, a molasses and water spray and application of distant anthill soil along with thorough irrigation to discourage farther damage. Zompopo ants deserve a blog entry of their own in the future. Printed info (at least in English) seems scarce. The zinnias Audrey and the Horst children planted have been completely carried away by the Zompopos.

For now, the carrots, lettuce and fastest-growing beans are thriving the best. Seedlings are nearing transplanting into the garden. Irrigation is another important need as the dry season unfolds. Dwain improvised from his familiar drip tape by constructing a functional drip irrigation line out of light-weight black-walled water line. No connections were purchased and a pocket knife made the necessary holes. For now water is used on a limited basis from the on-site well.

On Saturday, as a fun after-school activity, we made soft pretzels at the Horst’s house. We enjoyed pretzel numbers, letters, hearts, braids, spirals. Toppings and dips included: cinnamon sugar, honey mustard, salt, chocolate chips, etc.
