How much fun can 15 Lempiras (75¢ U.S.) buy? After discovering an unused tether-ball in storage we purchased a length of rope in the market and hung it on the swing-less swing set. This weekend it has become the latest diversion for the boys to test out their agility and punching prowess.

On Wednesday, Angelica presented a one-page proposal/persuasive argument to “Principal & Teacher” (a.k.a. Dwain & Audrey) detailing why the Horst children should have off school on Friday. It was signed by all three children and included arguments such as, “We didn’t have off school on Labor Day. Our learning would be enhanced by being exposed to cultural celebrations in Honduras such as El Dia del Niño (The Day of the Child) which happens on Friday. Angelica’s birthday is Friday. We agree to write about our day off.” On Friday the children had off school and celebrated El Dia del Niño with La Finca children.

Celebrating El Dia del Niño involved skits, puppet show, music, crazy outfits, games, piñatas and food.
Audrey debated whether or not to attempt tutoring classes in the afternoon with post-party sugar-filled children. Her decision was easy when most of her students congregated at the door begging for classes.

What’s that smell? After one of the hottest weeks of our stay here in the mountain valley Dwain’s challenge was to minimize the odor of 224 rapidly growing broilers in the room between our house and the church/assembly hall. With many wood-working shops in town, gathering wood shavings for fresh bedding wasn’t difficult. But some people were definitely commenting, nonetheless, on the new variety of odors wafting from the open windows! Thankfully, the birds and the barn are ready for moving day – scheduled for Monday. While we had a refreshing 1.5+ inch rainstorm Friday evening, the weather is still hot and dry… perfect for introducing young chicks to the outdoors.
