The Horst children enjoyed playing verbal April Fool’s jokes on Audrey. Also, this week they made chocolate, honey and peanut butter candy for Easter. Every piece of candy had to symbolize something from the Easter story.

Friday during Spanish class we made pupusas (cheese folded into a pastry and fried like tortillas) and chismol (peppers, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and lemon juice).

At the end of class, we were invited to a pizza and cake party celebrating several staff birthdays. We met the president of the school. The director and all five professors were present. The pizza was delivered from Pizza Hut in Tegucigalpa (about 40 minutes away). In an earlier class, our teacher told us residents in Valle have resisted requests to build Pizza Huts and Wendy’s in Valle because of the potential health detriments of such eateries.

Javier continues to recover from his accident and receives a daily carrot from the garden, jealously delivered by those helping Dwain. He spends his days in the Horst’s house with his bed overlooking the garden.

The team from New Jersey left this morning. Thanks to them (and the continued hard work of La Finca boys and previous teams) the new computer lab now has electricity installed and boasts a new coat of paint along with windows and trim. The boys’ old dorms continue to be prepped for a new roof and facelift. Dwain spent a few days reassembling and building new concrete forms for porch pillar posts.

While the team was here Dwain was without a coffee pot and practiced “slow food” – making coffee the Honduran way.



Zompopo update: Dwain discovered the main colony’s food/fungus cavern. After photos and tours he incinerated it.
